JERSEY CITY — The Knights of Rizal NJ-Chapter Inc., Ladies for Rizal NJ-Chapter, Pan-American Concerned Citizens Action League, Inc. (PACCAL), JCI Philippine American New Jersey, Catholic Action of Mary (CAM), The Filipino School of New York & New Jersey and FAHNS NJ celebrate Filipino American History Month.

Filipino American History Month is celebrated in the United States during the month of October, since the earliest documented proof of Filipino presence in the Continental United States falls in October 1587.

This means that Filipinos came to the U.S. approximately 65 years after Magellan discovered the Philippines.

In 2009, Congress passed the resolution (H. RES. 80), officially recognizing October as Filipino American History Month.

On Oct. 1, 2018, the opening reception to commemorate the start of Filipino American History Month was held at the Five Corners Branch Library.

Sir Joey Mayo, Chapter Commander of Knights of Rizal NJ-Chapter Inc, led the opening ceremony.

Sir Ed Toloza, Tax Assessor, presented a resolution on behalf of the city officially recognizing October as Filipino American History Month in the City of Jersey City.

The program continued with the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the opening of the “Filipino American History Exhibit” which will be displayed at the 2nd floor of the library for the entire month.

The series of month-long activities are co-chaired by Lady Allah Archangel, Ladies for Rizal NJ-Chapter & Sir Joey Mayo, Chapter Commander of Knights of Rizal NJ-Chapter Inc.
