Vice President Leni Robredo at the University of the Philippines Los Baños.

BENJAMIN Franklin once said that “the qualities of a diplomat are sleepless tact, unmovable calmness, and a patience that no folly, no provocation, no blunders may shake.”

An ambassador or representative to the United Nations is a diplomat whose main responsibility is to promote the national interests and support the policies of his country in that international body.

He is the highest ranking official of his government in that organization.

As such, using Benjamin Franklin’s definition, such diplomat must be tactful, calm and patient.

This diplomat must be careful and respectful in his actions and in his words.

He is his country’s ambassador of good will.

Teodoro “Teddyboy” Locsin, Jr. is the new ambassador of the Philippines to the United Nations, who, could easily promote ill will, instead of good will, if he does not embrace the diplomatic language, especially in his postings on Twitter.

Earlier this week, he branded the Vice President of the country he represents carelessly, using vulgar language.

Admittedly lacking information about the speech of Vice President Leni Robredo, he immediately commented in Inquirer.dot and on his Twitter irresponsibly, saying the Veep was an “idiot woman.”

Mr. Locsin should know the difference between shifting the focus of a social problem from punitive to health issue.

That’s not legalizing.

That’s decriminalizing.

That was what VP Robredo said and meant.

We believe he owes his Vice President an apology.

Some Filipino-Americans in New York and New Jersey who are not used to reading vulgarity and crude language, commented on Mr. Locsin’s idiot comment:

Domingo Jun Hornilla — A very shameful comment of a person who is supposed to represent the whole Filipino people, including the Hon. Vice President of the Philippines who was elected by majority of the voters.

Annie Ortiz — So disappointed with him...

Josefina Sanchez Badana — Terrible!!! What a shame !!!

Last year, thousands of online petitioners urged the UN to reject Locsin’s nomination.

The petition stated, “His (Locsin’s) blatant justification of anti-Semitic lingo of the President of the Republic of the Philippines makes him a racist, clearly showing his prejudice against the Jewish people.”

Mr. Teddyboy must realize that he is now a diplomat, not a broadcast commentator anymore.
